Meet Our Women's Center Team 

Andria Smith, RNC-OB, CBC, CCE
Interim Director

Andria Smith RNC-OB, CBC, CCE is a nationally certified inpatient obstetrics registered nurse, certified breastfeeding counselor, and certified childbirth educator.  She is a graduate of Southwestern Community College with her Associate’s Degree in Nursing.  She is in the process of furthering her education.  Andria is a native of Haywood County and lives here with her husband and daughter.  She teaches our Childbirth Education classes and works in the Women’s Care Center and is an experienced nurse of 16 years.

David Kirk, MD - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Dr. Kirk received his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine and completed his Internship and Residency at the University of Tennessee in Memphis, TN. He has 22 years of medical experience and specializes in all areas of obstetrics and gynecology and laparoscopic surgery. His areas of special interest are minimally invasive surgery, treatment of endometriosis, and menopausal symptoms. He has over 20 years of experience in obstetrics and gynecology.  He is in practice at Haywood Women's Medical Center at 35 Facility Drive in Clyde, NC on the HRMC campus. 

Jenny Van Winkle, MD - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Dr. Van Winkle is board certified in Obstetrics & Gynecology. She received her medical degree from Texas A&M Health Science Center – College of Medicine and completed her residency at The Methodist Hospital – Houston Obstetrics & Gynecology in Houston, TX.  Her special interests and training include prenatal care, family planning, infertility evaluations and treatment, laparoscopic and vaginal surgeries, well-woman exams, colposcopy and LEEP (Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure) procedures, hysteroscopy and menopausal care. Van Winkle is also fluent in Spanish. She is in practice at Haywood Women's Medical Center at 35 Facility Drive in Clyde, NC on the HRMC campus. 

Robin Matthews, MD - Gynecology

Dr. Robin Matthews is board-certified in Obstetrics & Gynecology with Haywood Women’s Medical Center. She received her medical degree from University of Alabama School of Medicine in Birmingham, AL, and completed her residency at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, NC. She is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.  She has over 25 years of experience in obstetrics and gynecology. She is in practice at Haywood Women's Medical Center at 35 Facility Drive in Clyde, NC on the HRMC campus. 

Jody Schmit, CNM - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Jodie has joined the medical team of Haywood Women’s Medical Center to provide comprehensive women’s and OB/GYN care to the community. Her areas of special interest are prenatal care, labor and delivery, and postpartum care, along with normal well-women care, such as yearly physical examinations. Her nursing degrees: BSN from the University of Minnesota | MSN from the Frontier Nursing University.  She is Certified by the American Midwifery Certification Board. 

Joseph Niner, MD - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Dr. Niner received his BS Degree from the University of Maryland and graduated from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He completed his residency at York Hospital in PA and is Board Certified in both Obstetrics and Gynecology and Obstetrics & Gynecologic Surgery by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.  He is presently caring for patients at Haywood Women's Medical Center at 35 Facility Drive in Clyde, NC on the HRMC campus. 

James Guerriere, MD - Pediatrics

Dr. James Guerriere is a graduate of University of South Carolina School of Medicine and completed his Pediatric residency at the University of South Alabama Children's Hospital. He is certified in the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (American Academy of Pediatrics) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS - American Heart Association).  He is in practice at Mountain Pediatric Group at 24 Falcon Crest Lane in Clyde, NC. 

Anna Mooney, MD  - Pediatrics

Dr. Anna Mooney received her medical degree from the University of South Carolina-School of Medicine, Columbia, SC and her post-graduate training was at the Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, GA where she completed a Pediatrics residency.  She also holds a B.S.. in Chemical Engineering (cum laude) from the University of South Carolina. She is certified by the American Heart Associate in PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) and NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation. She is in practice at Mountain Pediatric Group at 24 Falcon Crest Lane in Clyde, NC. 

Mark Kinter, MD  - Pediatrics/Family Medicine

Born in Parkersburg, WV, Dr. Kinter received his B.A... degree in Microbiology from Clemson University, SC. He received his medical degree from the University of SC in Charleston. He completed his family medicine residency at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC in 1994 and has been Board Certified in Family Medicine since 1994. Dr. Kinter joined Midway Medical Center in 1999. He is certified in the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (American Academy of Pediatrics) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS - American Heart Association) as well as Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS).  Dr. Kinter serves as the Chief of the Maternal Child Health Service at Haywood Regional Medical Center and on the Board of Trustees. 

Nancy Freeman, MD  - Pediatrics/Family Medicine

A Haywood County native, Dr. Freeman received her B.A... in Biology from Wake Forest University and her medical degree from UNC Chapel-Hill. She completed her Family Medicine residency training in 1985 at MAHEC Family Medicine Program in Asheville, NC and has been Board Certified in Family Medicine since 1985. Dr. Freeman joined Midway Medical Center in 1985. She is certified in the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (American Academy of Pediatrics) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS - American Heart Association). 


Women's Care Team

Devon Danner, RN

Devon received her associates degree in nursing at Southwestern Community College in 2012, then attended Western Carolina University and graduated in 2014 with a Bachelors of Science in nursing, Magna Cum Laude. She is a registered nurse and works as a staff nurse on the women’s care floor. Her certifications include basic life support, advanced life support, pediatric advanced life support, and advanced life support in obstetrics.She also is  NRP and STABLE certified. She has experience in long term care, pediatric home health care, intensive care, and labor and delivery. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society, The Association of Women’s Health, and Neonatal Nurses Group.

It was always a dream for Devon to work with moms, babies, and children since she was 13, which led her pursuit of becoming a delivery nurse. In her spare time she enjoys sewing, reading, photography, swimming, traveling, and spending time with her Border collie mix named Juno. 

Marsha Donaldson, RN

Marsha works as a charge nurse and staff nurse on the women's care unit.  She has been on the womens care unit for 36 years.  She obtained her Bachelors of Science in nursing from Western Carolina University in 1980. She also has a RNC certifications in inpatient obstetrics.

An RNC has taken the next step and established experience and insight in a specialized practice. Certifications are granted by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and require the candidate to have lengthy professional experience and to pass a certification exam.

Emily Easterling, RN

Emily was born in Mississippi, but grew up in Panama City, FL. She attended Mississippi State University and graduated in 2001 with her Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences. After marrying and having a daughter she was a Research Associate at the MSU Chemical Engineering department while working on her master’s degree. Shortly after graduating with her Masters of Science in Microbiology, Emily and her family moved to Boone, NC where she could pursue her interest in complementary medicine. In 2011 she completed the four year acupuncture program and internship at Jung Tao School of Classical Chinese Medicine where she developed a holistic understanding of health and healing. She practiced acupuncture in Valley Crucis, NC until she and her family moved to Asheville in 2013. Emily attended Western Carolina University’s accelerated bachelor of science program receiving the ABSN 2014 Ethics Award and graduating with magna cum laude honors in 2014. She has been employed by Haywood Regional since March 2015 having worked on the Progressive Care Unit before joining the Women’s Care team of nurses in March 2016. She is also BLS and NRP certified. Finally feeling that she’s found her rightful place in healthcare, she is enjoying learning more and more in this fascinating field. On her days off she likes to be outdoors, especially in the warmer months. She enjoys dancing, singing, and learning ukulele. She is a licensed acupuncturist practicing in Asheville and volunteers her time and services to veterans at Helios Warriors.

Katie Hargrove, RN

Katie works as a staff nurse on the women’s care floor. Katie is a graduate of Western Carolina University where she earned her Bachelors of Science degree in Nursing and minor in psychology, with cum laude honors. She has certifications in BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP, and STABLE. Katie began her career at Haywood Regional Medical Center in July of 2015. She is a local to Haywood County and feels honored to begin her career in the county she loves. Katie grew up babysitting and has always loved kids, which gave way to her desire and passion to work in labor and delivery.  Outside of work, she enjoy mission work and bible study, being outdoors, hiking, playing with her dog, and helping her dad on the farm, as well as hanging out with family and friends.

Lauren Marshall, RN

Jamie Price, RN

Jamie received her ADN, associates degree in nursing, from Haywood Community College in 2012. She has experience working in a Progressive Care Unit, MAHEC OB, and years working in labor and delivery. She currently works as an RN on the women’s care floor and has certifications in NRP, STABLE, and BLS. Her hobbies include spending time with family and friends, listening to music, and singing. 

Brooke Rhea, RN

Brooke has been an RN on labor and delivery at Haywood Regional Medical Center for nine years. Brooke is a charge nurse and takes great pride in educating new nursing staff in the specialized field of labor and delivery. She obtained her National Certification in Obstetrical Inpatient in 2011. Brooke’s expertise includes labor and delivery, mother baby postpartum education, and women’s gynecological surgeries. She is a breastfeeding advocate and is experienced with breastfeeding education. Brooke was raised in Asheville North Carolina and moved to Waynesville in 2002. She is married and has a 12 year old daughter. She enjoys painting, music, and the outdoors.  

Kristen Singleton, RN

Kristen attended East Tennessee State University where she pursued her dream of becoming a labor and delivery nurse. She graduated in 2015 from ETSU with a Bachelors of Science degree in nursing, with cum laude honors. Shortly after graduating she was hired onto the Women's Care Center at HRMC. She is certified in BLS and NRP. Kristen was born in Atlanta, Georgia but moved to Haywood County when she was seven years old and enjoys working in a job that she loves in an area she considers her hometown. She married in 2013 and enjoys going to the lake and the beach, and spending time with her family and dog. 

Caitlin Smathers, RN

Caitlin received her ADN, associates degree in nursing, from Haywood Community College and now works as a floor nurse on the women’s care unit. She has certifications in BLS, PALS, NRP, STABLE, and intermediate EFM.

She enjoys horseback riding, reading, camping, spending time at the lake, baking, and anything outdoors during her spare time from work. 

Pam Spencer, RN

Darci Walker, RN

Darci was born and raised in Grand Junction, CO and moved to Waynesville in 2005. She graduated with BSN from Western Carolina University.  

Her certifications include: BLS (Basic Life Support) , ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support), NRP (Newborn Resuscitation Protocol), PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support), ALSO (Advanced Life Support Obstetrics), STABLE Certified. She is currently attending graduate school at East Carolina University for Midwifery, will graduate in May 2018.  

She lives with her husband and three kids and her hobbies include hiking, camping, fishing, and watching football.

Meet Our Parent Education Team 

Jennifer Passwaters, BSN, RN, IBCLC 

Jennifer is a graduate of the University Of Maryland School Of Nursing, class of 2011. She also has a bachelor’s of science degree in chemistry from Villa Julie College. Before moving to Haywood County with her husband in February of 2012, Jennifer worked as a nurse at University of Maryland Medical Center  She started at Haywood Regional in March of 2012 as a nurse and has worked on both the Progressive Care Unit and the Intensive Care Unit.

After struggling with breastfeeding her daughter, born in September of 2012, Jennifer started working towards becoming an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).  She trained for two years under Betsy Wall, CCE, IBCLC and sat for her board exam in July 2015.  Jennifer transitioned into the IBCLC position in August of 2015 at HRMC.   

Jennifer enjoys knitting, reading and spending time with my her two little girls.

Laura Willis, RN, BSN, IBCLC 

Laura Willis, RN, BSN, IBCLC is a graduate of Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing and University of North Carolina-Charlotte. She has been a nurse for over 30 years and sat for her board exam in 2008. Laura has also been a La Leche League Leader since 2007.

Her practice began in Charlotte at Carolinas Medical System. In the summer of 2015 she and her family moved to Waynesville and she began practicing at Haywood Regional Medical Center in October of 2015. 

She loves mountain living, horses and crafting stained glass.
