Haywood Regional Medical Center (HRMC) hosted "Radiant Resilience," an uplifting event honoring the brave journeys of breast cancer survivors, on Tuesday, October 29th. Approximately 80 attendees gathered at Lake Junaluska’s Warren Center for a night filled with hope, inspiration, and community support.
The event brought together breast cancer survivors from HRMC’s breast care program over the last two years, along with their guests and dedicated hospital staff and physicians. HRMC CEO Chris Brown, RN, welcomed everyone with heartfelt opening remarks, emphasizing the importance of community and resilience in the face of adversity.
“To our cherished survivors: thank you for placing your trust in us. We are truly honored to have been part of your journey. It is a privilege to support you, and we deeply appreciate the faith you have shown in us during such a vulnerable time,” said Brown. “You have shown remarkable strength, not only in facing your diagnosis but also in the way you have embraced life with renewed vigor and hope. Your resilience inspires us all.”
Allison Johnson, MD, lead breast surgeon with Haywood Surgical Associates and Chief of Staff at HRMC, also addressed the audience. She played a vital role in establishing the Haywood Breast Center and continues to care for patients navigating their breast cancer journeys.
“Every survivor has a unique story and it was incredibly moving to have a space where those stories could be shared in such a meaningful way,” Dr. Johnson stated. “The resilience of our survivors inspires hope in each one of us and strengthens our commitment to providing excellent breast care. I am honored to be part of each of these individuals’ journeys.”
In light of recent challenges our community has endured due to Hurricane Helene, HRMC was grateful to be able to hold this special event. While some plans for breast cancer awareness month were paused while the community focused on recovery efforts, the hospital’s commitment to the fight against breast cancer remains strong and resolute.
The evening featured inspiring testimonials from survivors, who courageously shared their personal stories of struggle and triumph. Nurse Navigator Barb Westlake, RN shared an inspirational poem, further underscoring the theme of resilience.
During a meaningful moment, survivors were invited to write a word that encapsulated their breast cancer journey on a pink ribbon, which they then placed on a large pink ribbon that will be displayed at the hospital. Each survivor also received a pink rose to commemorate the special occasion.
“Radiant Resilience” was a powerful celebration of the strength and courage exhibited by breast cancer survivors. As attendees shared their experiences, the event fostered a deep sense of hope and connection among those affected by breast cancer. HRMC remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting these brave individuals as they navigate their healing journeys, ensuring they never walk alone.
As part of this ongoing commitment, HRMC encourages women to prioritize their health by scheduling regular mammograms. Early detection saves lives. Walk-in mammography is available at the Haywood Breast Center on Fridays between 9:00AM and 11:00AM on the second floor of the Outpatient Care Center, located at 581 Leroy George Drive in Clyde. Women are also welcome to call at any time to schedule a mammogram or learn more at 828-456-8633.
