Haywood Regional Medical Center introduces Pro-Nox™ nitrous oxide, enhancing pain management options for laboring mothers
February 19, 2025

Haywood Regional Medical Center (HRMC) is excited to announce the introduction of Pro-Nox™ nitrous oxide as a new pain management option for laboring mothers. This addition is designed to enhance the birthing experience by providing expectant mothers with a safe, effective, and self-administered method for managing labor pain.
The Pro-Nox™ system is an innovative, patient-controlled option that allows patients to self-administer a 50% nitrous oxide and 50% oxygen blend, commonly referred to as "laughing gas." This analgesic option works quickly to temporarily block pain signals from reaching the brain, offering immediate relief while allowing the patient to remain in control of their pain management throughout labor.
"We are thrilled to offer Pro-Nox™ as a valuable tool for our patients," said LaCrystal Gordon, DNP, RN, Chief Nursing Officer. "Our goal is to provide every mother with a range of pain management options to choose from, ensuring they can personalize their birthing experience. This option empowers women to manage their comfort while still receiving the support and care they need during one of the most important moments of their lives."
Pro-Nox™ has been used safely and effectively in labor and delivery settings worldwide for decades. A reliable method for alleviating pain and reducing anxiety during childbirth, it complements existing pain relief options like epidurals and intravenous medications. The system is administered via a mask and allows the patient to control the timing and dosage of the medication, ensuring that the level of relief is tailored to each woman’s needs and preferences.
“As a physician, it's important to me that we provide our patients safe and effective pain management options and that our patients can make personal choices according to their wants and needs during their labor course,” said obstetrician Jenny Van Winkle, MD, who practices at Haywood Regional Medical Center. “Pro-Nox™ gives women the opportunity to actively participate in their care, which can help alleviate both pain and anxiety during a very unpredictable event in their lives.”
Pro-Nox™ allows patients to inhale the analgesic at their own pace and intensity. The rapid onset of relief and quick clearance from the body mean that women can often continue to interact with their support team, walk, and move around as they wish during labor.
"We know that every woman has her own vision of what a positive birth experience looks like," said Gordon. "By offering Pro-Nox™, we aim to ensure that women feel supported, informed, and empowered to make decisions that align with their preferences during labor and delivery."
The introduction of Pro-Nox™ at HRMC is part of the hospital’s ongoing commitment to providing excellent care to the community and prioritizing patient-centered care and the diverse needs of expectant mothers.
