Haywood Regional Medical Center recognized by American Society for Health Care Engineering for energy reduction efforts
January 15, 2025
Haywood Regional Medical Center (HRMC) is proud to announce it has received the 2024 Energy to Care® Award from the American Society for Health Care Engineering (ASHE) of the American Hospital Association.
Energy to Care® is ASHE’s award-winning sustainability program that supports healthcare facilities in tracking their energy, water, and emissions reduction efforts. The program recognizes hospitals and health systems that achieve significant progress in their sustainability goals. HRMC is one of only 102 facilities nationwide to receive this honor in 2024, representing just 2.3% of participants in the Energy to Care® program.
Awarded facilities must demonstrate a 10% reduction in energy use intensity over the previous year, or 15% over two years, to qualify.
“Receiving the Energy to Care® Award is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our outstanding facilities team as part of our larger commitment to our community,” said Chris Brown, RN, HRMC CEO. “Our team’s dedication to responsible energy use and stewardship of resources has made a lasting and recognizable impact. I am very proud that their efforts have earned our organization this distinction."
In addition to meeting the above-mentioned reduction criteria, HRMC was also recognized for meeting the following criteria across the last three years as part of the award: tracking energy and water consumption and greenhouse gas emissions; achieving an ENERGY STAR Score of 75 or higher for three consecutive years; maintaining a weather-normalized SOURCE EUI equal to or lower than baseline for three or more years.
The Energy to Care® Award recognizes facilities that benefit the community and environment and demonstrate leadership in healthcare sustainability. Winners are selected through an application process and honored at ASHE’s Annual Health Care Facilities Innovation Conference annually.
Participation in ASHE’s Energy to Care® program has seen consistent growth since its inception in 2006. More than 4,400 facilities have participated since 2010, with significant cost savings and increased sustainability recognized across participating facilities nationwide.
