Haywood Regional Medical Center Welcomes Therapy Dog “Maverick” to Volunteer Program
March 18, 2025

Haywood Regional Medical Center (HRMC) is thrilled to welcome Maverick, a four-year-old Newfoundland therapy dog, to its volunteer program. Maverick, known for his gentle demeanor and love for people, will provide comfort and companionship to patients, visitors, and staff throughout the hospital.
Maverick, owned by Connie Sovie, has extensive experience as a therapy dog, particularly working with children. He has spent countless hours allowing children to read aloud while resting on his back, offering a calming and supportive presence. Now, he will bring his warmth and soothing nature to patients at HRMC on a regular basis.
“Therapy animals have been shown to reduce stress, anxiety, and even physical pain for patients,” said HRMC CEO Chris Brown, RN. “We are excited to have Maverick join our team and look forward to the positive impact he will have on our hospital community.”
The presence of therapy animals in healthcare settings has been widely recognized for its numerous benefits. Studies have shown that therapy dogs can help lower blood pressure, reduce cortisol levels (a stress hormone), and increase the release of endorphins, which promote feelings of happiness and well-being. Additionally, therapy dogs provide emotional support, ease feelings of loneliness, and enhance social interaction, especially for patients who may be experiencing long hospital stays or undergoing difficult treatments.
Maverick’s regular visits to HRMC will provide emotional support, promote healing, and bring joy to those who need it most. His presence is expected to be particularly beneficial for patients undergoing treatment, families in waiting areas, and hospital staff who work tirelessly to provide quality care.
